๐Ÿงด Wig Care 101: Washing & Styling Tips from Lena

Taking good care of your wig can make a big difference in how long it lastsโ€”and how great it looks. Hereโ€™s how to wash and style it the right way.

Washing Your Wig
I recommend washing your wig about every 30 wears. Before you begin, gently brush out any knots using a flexible-bristled brush.

Place the wig on a styrofoam head and secure it using T-pinsโ€”but never pin directly into the lace or scalp area, as this can cause damage.

Wet the wig thoroughly and wash it twice using a color-safe, phosphate-free shampoo. Always pat (never scrub) the lace top, silk top, or lace front.

If youโ€™re using conditioner, only apply it to the wefted sectionsโ€”never the top or lace areas. Rinse thoroughly.

After rinsing, lightly wring out the wig and wrap it in a towel for a few minutes. Then, remove it from the towel, gently brush it out, and use detangling spray if needed. Apply your chosen styling product (like mousse or cream), and let the wig air dry completely on a styrofoam head before styling.

Styling Your Wig
While itโ€™s always best to have your wig styled by a trained professional, itโ€™s helpful to know how to do it yourself when needed. You can find my recommended styling products here.

Most stylists can style wigs, but cutting is another storyโ€”it requires specific training.

If youโ€™re styling at home, hereโ€™s what youโ€™ll need:

  • Wig head
  • Wig clamp
  • T-pins
  • Round brush
  • Curling iron
  • Blow dryer with a concentrator (director)
  • Heat protectant

Watch YouTube tutorials, take your time, and practice often. Keep the heat lowโ€”never go above 350ยบ. And remember: always style on completely dry hair. Avoid blow drying a wig from soaking wet unless absolutely necessary.
